Apparently we are not the only ones who are getting caught up in the Gatsby frenzy, that is building ahead of the release of the latest film adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic. Thanks to our friends at the great Early Word blog, we learned that even faux conservative talk show hosts are creating book clubs! We have some extra copies on order, so stop in and read the book, before the movie comes out this coming weekend.

What’s better than Free?

One of the basic tenets of librarianship is the free and unfettered access to as wide a variety of materials as possible. And there are many in our profession who are also huge comics fans. So getting the word out about this upcoming event seems like a no-brainer! Our comic and graphic novel collection is available for free everyday with a valid library card. But on Saturday May 4, we encourage comic fans to visit their local comic book ships and pick up their free comic book, and maybe buy a few others as well! Root for a Hero

With Spring continuing to delay its arrival, despite what the calendar says, and this being a vacation week, you might be looking for an indoor activity for the kids! We have just the ticket, a screening of the new Disney animated feature, “Wreck it Ralph”. We will be showing the movie tomorrow April 3rd beginning at 2pm. Admission is free and refreshments will be available.

March 31st : Library Closed for Easter

The library will be closed on Sunday March 31st, in observance of Easter. No materials will be due that day as a result. We will reopen on Monday April 1st for regular business hours.

March 25: A Rousing Finish

We originally planned to show this film in January, but Mother Nature had other ideas. So we decided to extend our schedule a week and finish off with a romantic swashbuckler. When you combine the “Duke” with Lee Marvin, add in a sultry Dorothy Lamour, you have a volatile combination! Showtime as always is 6pm and admission is free. As a special treat, we will be having some pizza and soft drinks brought in for anyone interested. We will resume the series in the fall.

Enchanted in the Highlands

We are winding down our classic movie season and finishing up with one that is sure to cast a spell on its viewers. Originally a Broadway musical, “Brigadoon” debuted in 1954, starring Gene Kelly, Van Johnson and Cyd Charisse. So after having your fill of all things Irish this weekend, join us on Monday for some Highlands romance! Showtime is 6pm and admission is free. Our final movie for this part of the series is a rescheduled showing of “Donovan’s Reef“, which will take place on March 25th. The series will resume in the fall.

March 11: A “Brady” Size Family

This week we feature a movie from 1968 that includes the unlikely pairing of Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda. Based on the true life story of Frank and Helen Beardsley, it may or may not have inspired the creation of the Brady Bunch television program, which debuted the following year. It is loosely based on the book, “Who Gets the Drumstick?”. Showtime as always is 6pm and admission is free. After this, we are down to our final two movies until the fall.

March 4: Feeling Rebellious?

We begin our final month of movies until the fall, with one of the most talked about and analyzed films of all time, “Rebel without a Cause“. Starring James Dean, Natalie Wood and Sal Mineo, the latter two receiving Oscar nominations for their work, this is a timeless story that was set to catapult James Dean to superstardom. Instead he was dead at age 24, before the film was even released. Showtime as always is 6pm and admission is free. As a added bonus, the Friends of the Waterford Library will be on hand selling raffle tickets for a prize package of tickets to Peter Pan at Proctor’s Theater.
