New Exhibit Opening
The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center will be hosting an open house this Friday, May 1st, for the opening of our new exhibit, “Making Waterford Our Home: Italians.” The open house will also mark the beginning of the 45th season for the museum. Regular hours will begin on Saturday May 2nd. The museum will be open Wednesdays through Fridays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. through the end of September with weekend hours continuing through the end of October.
This is the first of a three part exhibit series which explores the lives of three different immigrant groups in Waterford, New York: Italian Americans; French Canadian Americans; and, Irish Americans. This first exhibition will run until April of 2010 and feature the history and traditions of the Italian Americans who made Waterford their home.
“This project has been a true community effort,” said Museum Director, Brad Utter. “We have conducted oral histories with 18 people of Italian descent and will have numerous objects on display that are on loan from our community members.”
This project has been supported by the New York Council for the Humanities, the New York State Council for the Arts and community based donations.
The Waterford Historical Museum and Cultural Center is located in the 1830 Hugh White Homestead on Museum Lane in the Town of Waterford. The Museum offers various programs and exhibits year round.
